Friday Tip of the Week: Purchasing staples

Buy dried beans, lentils, split peas, etc. from (no affiliation to the site just a recommendation!) instead of buying them in small packets or tins from the supermarket.  The prices are much better.

Technically FI but still haven't RE'ed! Love my job and feel I add value. Based in Auckland, married with 1 lovely daughter who is still at school. Became FI through a combination of good investments and a very high savings rate!

  1. That’s cool – I’ve always meant to try dried beans, but I’ve never cooked with them before. For say, bean nachos, I would usually chuck onion, spices and a can of red kidney beans in the pan for 10-15 mins, add salsa and corn chips, grill some cheese over and nom. What would I need to do if I had dried red kidney beans instead? Soak first? Cook in water? I find the variety of advice online a little overwhelming.
